Mr. Putin: Operative in the Kremlin

Dr. Clifford G. Gaddy, Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution, will address the Naples Council on World Affairs on Monday, January 20th, 2014, at 3;45 and 7:30pm at St. John the Evangelist’s Kiney Hall, 625 111th St. No. in North Naples.

The New York Times of 12/29/13 suggests that our State Department has been looking at “the means to mend bruised relations between [Russian-U.S.] the two rival nations”. Meanwhile, Dr. Gaddy feels that this has been and will be a time of unprecedented focus on Putin globally, and the news of suicide bombings in Volgograd in anticipation of security issues facing the leader in Sochi certainly bears out that premise.

“The past few weeks have actually revealed just how complex Putin really is. He's probably the most formidable adversary America has seen in quite a while,” Gaddy says. ‘He's clever and duplicitous, very skilled at playing people's own weaknesses and blunders against them — skills he honed as a KGB case officer.’

Author, with Fiona Hill, of “Mr. Putin: Operative in the Kremlin” is really about trying to dissect this complex personality. They aimed to find out who he really is and what the real sources of his skills and power are.
