“PAKISTAN AND AFGHANISTAN: POST-WAR CHALLENGES FOR THE UNITED STATES”
with Shuja Nawaz of the Atlantic Council

Shuja Nawaz will address the Naples Council on World Affairs on Monday, March 24th, 2014 at St. John the Evangelist’s Kiney Hall, 625 111th Avenue No. in North Naples, at 3:45 and 7:30 pm. Director of the South Asia Center at the Atlantic Council, he will speak to the problems facing the United States in our relationships with Pakistan and Afghanistan.

“Trying to manage relations with these two countries is clearly a huge challenge for the U.S. See-sawing between giving, or taking away, ever the carrot and the stick, has been short on success. Trying to understand the role the Taliban plays in that drama is yet another diplomatic challenge, what will the U.S. role be after 2014?

Raised and educated in Pakistan, Mr. Nawaz has written extensively about that country, the Pakistani Army’s experience with counter-insurgency, and the economic and political challenges for Pakistan’s civilian administration. Knowing President Karzai’s “personality quirks”, can he determine why this ruler has been so at odds with our administration?

Mr. Nawaz received his B.A. at Gordon College, Rawalpindi, and continued graduate studies at the Columbia University School of Journalism. His career includes heading three separate divisions of the International Monetary Fund before joining the Atlantic Council.
