Western Hemisphere Relations: Tectonic Shifts

Dr. Cynthia Watson will address the Naples Council on World Affairs on Monday, April 1st, at St. John the Evangelist’s Kiney Hall, 625 111th Avenue, No, North Naples, at 3:45 and 7:30 pm.

The traditional assumption that U.S. Latin American relations will overcome minor tensions to create an increasingly stronger relationship is under considerable stress. Outsiders such as the Chinese, the Iranians, and the Russians continue to deepen their involvement in the region. Also, President Hugo Chavez Frias' death opens the door to more jockeying for new relationships in Latin America. Some of those relationships will be within political systems (within his Venezuela) while others will challenge international relationships. On 1 April, Cynthia Watson will discuss where the region's future, after a decade of new actors challenging the U.S. role there, may go and why.
