Understanding Muslim Societies

We are honored to welcome Dr. Telhami as one of the Distinguished Scholars chosen to speak on behalf of the Carnegie Corporation’s “Engage America Series” in cooperation with the World Affairs Councils of America. This project is part of the Six Top Issues for US National Security, and the Carnegie Corporation Grant is part of its broader program to offer the American Public a more factual and nuanced understanding of the history and cultures of contemporary Muslim Societies.

Dr. Telhami is the Anwar Sadat Professor for Peace and Development at the University of Maryland and is a non resident Fellow at the Brookings Institution. He has taught at Princeton, Columbia, Cornell, Swarthmore and Ohio State University, and moving west has also taught at Berkeley where he received his PhD. in Political Science.

Dr. Telhami is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and he has also served on the board of the US Institute of Peace. He was given the Distinguished International Service Award by the University of Maryland and the Excellence in Public Service Award by the University System of Maryland Board of Regents.
