From Egypt to Syria: Dispatches from a Changing Middle East

Just back from reporting in the Middle East, New York Times United Nations Bureau Chief Neil MacFarquhar discusses the most recent developments of the ongoing Arab awakening. MacFarquhar draws from over 25 years of experience reporting in the region for the Associated Press and the New York Times to consider the ongoing changes in Egypt and Syria and the challenges facing both countries in 2012.

Neil MacFarquhar served as New York Times Cairo Bureau chief from 2001-2005 and went on to become its United Nations bureau chief. His Mideast expertise predates his Cairo assignment: he grew up in Libya and covered the region for the AP, including stints in Israel and Kuwait. He is fluent in both French and Arabic and is the author of The Media Relations Department of Hizbollah Wishes You a Happy Birthday : Unexpected encounters in a Changing Middle East and a novel, The Sand Café.
