EMERGING THREATS AND THE GLOBAL HEALTH SECURITY AGENDA
The Committee on Special Activities is pleased to present Dr. Julie E. Fischer who will speak to the outbreak of Ebola and the attention that has generated in public awareness of disease control worldwide. Issues such as the new emergence of Polio, continuing deaths from Malaria, and the enduring presence of AIDS remind us of the global medical challenges facing world population. The program will be held at St. John the Evangelist’s Kiney Hall, 625 111th Avenue, No. Naples, on Tuesday, February 10th, at 10 am.
Dr. Fischer co-directs a portfolio of research projects in global health security at the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services, where she is currently an Associate Research Professor in the Department of Health Policy. From 2007-2012, Dr. Fischer directed Stimson’s Global Health Security project, exploring the tools, policies, and partnerships that strengthen global capacities for disease detection and response. Dr. Fischer is a former Council on Foreign Relations International Affairs Fellow and American Association for the Advancement of Science Congressional Fellow. With the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, she worked on issues related to emergency medical preparedness and the consequences of biological, chemical, and radiological exposures during military service. Dr. Fischer received a BA from Hollins University and a PhD in microbiology and immunology from Vanderbilt University.
