"Sardar"
From Afghanistan's Golden Age to Carnage

The Committee on Special Activities of the Naples Council is pleased to present our own council member and author, Abdullah Sharif, at a program to discuss Book 1 of Afghanistan’s Golden Age. The program will take place on Monday, December 15th, at 10 am at St. John the Evangelist’s Church, 625 111th St, No. in North Naples, in the Seminar Room of the Claussen Center.

It’s amazing to discover Afghanistan’s Golden Age (1930-1970s) in Abdullah Sharif’s first book, SARDAR: From Afghanistan’s Golden Age to Carnage, Book 1. Who knew? Given the media’s unflinching reports of a war-torn nation, readers will be surprised to learn of Kabuli women (like the author’s mother and sisters) sporting miniskirts and bell-bottomed pants when Afghanistan began modernizing in the 1950s. But the country fell to communist insurgencies instigated by Russia. Today, as Afghans fight for their sovereignty, this timely memoir analyzes these eras with profound insights that only an insider can provide.

Abdul is a native of Kabul, Afghanistan. Educated in France and the United States, he began his career as an aerospace engineer but was driven by his “sense of civic duty” to return to Afghanistan under the auspices of the U.S. Departments of State and Defense. Please join us for this presentation of personal and bittersweet recollections.
