“Turkey: Back To the Future, the New Ottoman Empire”

Dr. Steven Cook will speak to the Naples Council on World Affairs on Monday, November 18th, 2013, at 3:45 and 7:30 pm, at St. John the Evangelist’s Kiney Hall;
625 111th Avenue No. in North Naples.

The Middle East is undergoing extraordinary change. Syria and Iraq are on the verge of tearing themselves apart, Jordan is under pressure, and Egypt is in perpetual turmoil.  Observers are increasingly talking about the “end of Sykes-Picot” and the post-WWI borders of the region and the emergence of Turkey as a regional power.  Is this “new Ottoman era” possible?  How is the combination of regional conflict and Turkish power shaping the region for the future? What role is there for the United States in the radically transformed geo-strategic environment in the Middle East?
