Russia: Domestic Uncertainties, Enduring National Interests

Steven L. Burg is Adlai E. Stevenson Professor of International Politics at Brandeis University. As Moscow streets erupt into a “Russian Spring”, [a speculative query by the West], is the present turmoil a pre-cursor to the upcoming elections and a spoiler for the shoo-in victory by Vladimir Putin? Will there be a display of brute force against a public demonstration? While those possibilities linger in the background, it is a certainty that Russia’s efforts to maximize its power are enduring.
